Emails from a modern Stoic – Letter 6

I hope you are going well. I just wanted to share my reflections from the last few weeks.

I see in myself, not just having improved but transformed. Although I wouldn’t say I am done. That there is nothing left in me needing to be worked on. As any person focused on personal development would say, there are a lot of things about me requiring to be built up,  fined down or eliminated.

Please note, that the fact that one can perceive their own failings, things that you were previously unaware of, in itself is evidence of a change for the better in one’s character. Think about people that are stuck in their own shit, it is a cause for celebration when they come to realise for themselves that they are getting in their own way. With this in mind, I want to share the changes I have been going through with you.

I want to share it so you know I am much more than the positive things I post on social media. That in sharing this, I am continuing to build on the friendship we have. That true friendship, which is not connected to the number of likes, shares or comments. I am sharing this with you, with no fear of being canceled, with no focus on doing businesses. Just focused on continuing to grow the type of friendship in which and for which people are ready to die.

I can give you plenty of examples of people who have a massive friends list, but no friendship. This is something that can never happen when shared experiences, goals and desires bring two people together in fellowship, focused on creating a life that is honourable. Why cannot it happen? Because they know that everything – and especially their setbacks – are shared between them.

Mate, you can’t imagine the amount of change I see around and in me each day by continuing my personal development.

“Tell me” you will be thinking, “the things you have found so effective”.

I want to, every one of them to you. Part of my joy in learning is that it puts me in a position to teach. Noting that however outstanding and helpful something might be, it will never give me any pleasure if the knowledge is to be for my benefit alone. If wisdom were offered to me on the one condition that I should keep it shut away and not share it to anyone, I would  reject it. There is no enjoying the possession of anything valuable unless you have someone to share it with.

I’ll shoot you a link to the audiobooks I have been listening to, that have been causing this inspiration and progress. To save you time looking for the good bits, I will share the times you should skip to, that I like the most. Keep in mind though, personal conversation and daily connection with someone will be of more benefit to you than any book .

Mate, I wish you were really here and on the spot with me. Firstly, because people believe their eyes more than their ears. Secondly, because the road to personal succes is a long one if you only read and consume information. But short and effectual if done with others, learning from personal examples.

Tony Robbins (Cleanthes) would never have been seen as an image of personal mastery (Zeno) if he had merely heard the NLP lectures ; he lived the tools, followed the creators of them (Richard Bandler and John Grinder), and the creators of what was before it (Milton Erickson and Virginia Satir), studied it all in his private life. He watched them (and others) to see if they lived in accordance with their own principles. Also consider long before these guru’s. Plato, Aristotle and a host of other philosophers all destined to take different paths, derived more from Socrates character than from his words. Consider the home, It is often not the values and philosophy our parents tell us about or ask us to read about. But in living under the the same roof as them that turn us into the people we are.

Mate, I don’t want you to come and visit just for the sake of your own personal development, but for my own as well. I think we will be of benefit to each other. Until you can get here, I will give you one final thought. I’ll tell you what key lesson I am taking away from all my study. Something that I wish for everyone, especially my friends.

What progress have I made? I am beginning to be my own friend.

Now that is progress indeed. Such a person will never be alone, and you may be sure he is a friend of all.

Cheers, Rob.
